Case Interview Preparation
What is a case interview?
During the interview, we will give you a problem or a challenge to solve. Often, our cases are based on past DBMC projects, which will help you better understand the work we do. However, we understand that not everyone has a banking or consulting background. Therefore, what we look for is the following:
Why a case interview?
We are in the business of helping clients solve some of the most complex problems. To do it well, we need to be able to clearly and logically structure and articulate the problem, take a structured approach to analyzing it with the right frameworks and facts, and ultimately solve the problem. Along the way, we need to articulate clearly and concisely the thinking that goes along with our approach and recommendations. A business case is a time-tested method to assess you problem-solving ability.
What we look for
We broadly look at the following skills:
- Problem Solving – we want to see your thought process, your structuring approach and how you break down a complex, ambiguous problem into smaller component parts.
- Analytical thinking - we want to see how you work through each component part in a logical manner by asking the right questions along the way.
- Data-driven decisions – we want you to justify the outcome of your case based on data and /or realistic assumptions.
- Clear and concise communication – we look for a clear articulation of your thought process throughout the case.
- Creative thinking - demonstrating creative thinking or bringing in industry knowledge / experience is always a plus. We also want you to be able to explore multiple alternative ideas.
- Recommendation and next steps – we want you to make a clear recommendation and outline next steps based on the work you’ve done throughout the case. There is no right or wrong answer to a case, as is often the case in real life!
